Dear Everybody,
It’s been a few months since the last Writing Talks meeting. Having started our year of female authors shortly after the last Writing Talks, we’ve already read and written quite a bit. The Alice Munro and Katherine Mansfield classes were back-to-back, and I think we earned ourselves a couple weeks of rest. Before we start another couple of exciting classes, Alice Munro-Flannery O’Connor and Margins of Memory - Winterson & Woolf, it’s time for our next Writing Talks meeting!Join us for Writing Talks on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at 8 PM. Writing Talks are for us to come together with fellow writers and readers and chat about all things writing. That said, we often have some themes or questions that guide our conversations, and for this Writing Talks meeting, it will be books on writing.
If you’re reading this, you already know about the books above, and perhaps a few more. Maybe you want to read them, maybe you already read them, maybe you liked them, maybe you didn’t. Why do writers write books about writing? Why do writers read books on writing? Do you have a favorite book on writing?
I confess that I collect books on writing and confess also that I haven’t read most of them. But I did read one book recently, which I know is better than some of those books I haven’t read. How can I be so sure? Verlyn Klinkenborg has basically written my writing and teaching philosophy in Several short sentences about writing, in shorter and better sentences than I could have. This is a book that I will reread many times, and use constantly. It inspires me even when it scares me. Come, and I’ll read you several short sentences from Several short sentences about writing. And I promise, you won’t leave empty-handed.
